If you currently hold your CTE Level I certificate, and you have a bachelor's degree in an approved subject area from an accredited undergraduate institution, you will complete additional graduate coursework to meet the requirements for a Level II certificate.

The candidate must be accepted into the career and technical education teacher preparation program at Temple University and pass the appropriate occupational competency examination. The candidate must complete and submit all the necessary documentation to Temple University. For example, an intern certificate issued any time in August of one year will expire on July 31 three years later.

You can only apply for the intern certificate if you are currently teaching or guaranteed a full-time teaching position. PDE will not renew an intern certificate.

PDE maintains that certification is the responsibility of the teacher. Our teacher certification degree programs in Career and Technical Education allow you to earn either a Bachelor's BSEd or Master's MEd degree, along with completing the Pennsylvania Department of Education requirements for certification in at least one subject area.

These programs are offered as non-degree, which means no bachelor's or master's degree is awarded upon completion of this program. You will complete only the coursework and in-service necessary to meet Pennsylvania Department of Education certification requirements for the associated teacher certification. For graduate non-degree programs, you must currently hold your Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an approved subject area.

The Intern certificate is a valid professional certificate that entitles the holder to fill a full-time professional teaching position. An Intern certificated individual is entitled to all rights and privileges of a temporary professional employee as defined by law.

The current regulation states that a Teacher Intern certificate qualifies the holder to hold a full-time teaching position in the certification endorsement area in elementary and secondary schools of Pennsylvania.
